Master photographer and chief instigator Jeff Johnson presents Composition for the Photographic Eye on Saturday, May 4, 2019, 8am – 4pm at ink! Coffee Little Raven, 1590 Little Raven Street, Denver, CO.
We’ve all been taught that composition is what makes for stunning imagery. It is what defines a great photograph from a mere snapshot. It entices the viewer into our vision and guides them through the image allowing them to see and feel the scene as we did, or as we want to convey it to our audience. Composition allows for us, as the artist, to transmit our thoughts and feelings, to make statements and offer opinions to the viewer about our vision and our art.
Do we really understand composition, though? Do we understand that It can work against us? Composition exists whether we like it, understand it or use it… or not!
Composition is a law. It is like gravity. It exists. Get up tomorrow morning and decide you are not going to bother with gravity when you leave your house. See what happens. That is exactly what happens to our photography when we “don’t bother” acknowledging the elements of composition.
In this very fun and informative, hands-on, walk-around workshop, Jeff hopes to unravel composition into a simple, easy to duplicate elements. One that you can wrap your head and heart around and use every time you point your camera somewhere.
At the start of the workshop Jeff will explain and demonstrate some simple elements of composition. Then we will break down into small groups and send you on your way to practice these techniques.
Session One: Each group will practice photographing “Leading Lines” ONLY!
Session Two: Each group will practice photographing “Rule of Thirds” ONLY!
Session Three: Each group will practice photographing “Color Harmony” ONLY!
Lunch (on your own)
Session Four: Each group will practice photographing “Balance” ONLY!
Session Five: Each group will practice photographing “Combinations of these elements”
This workshop will be followed by an optional constructive critique and discussion the following day, Sunday, May 5, noon – 3pm, at the Lone Tree Civic Center. You will be able to submit 2-3 of your best images to share with others and receive helpful comments from Jeff.
The more compositional elements you include in a photograph, the stronger and more compelling they become. The impact of your images will be lasting and more memorable. For example, if you use the rule-of-thirds to place your focal point and use a leading line to take your viewer there, your image becomes stronger. More compositional elements, stronger imagery! It’s a fact, Jack!
