Learn how to use the Windy App for forecasting dramatic light and photogenic, colorful clouds and more. Register now for the four-part online Windy App Training through DeYoung Active Photo Tours, 6:30-7:45 pm MT on February 11, 18, 20, and 25, 2025. The registration cost is $79 for all Zoom sessions.
Following Michael DeYoung’s well-received presentation during the Southwest Camera Club October 2024 meeting about the weather prediction Windy App, there is enough interest to proceed with a four-part, in-depth workshop with Michael covering not only the features of the app but also learn how Michael uses the app to predict spectacular photographic conditions.
Register Now – After paying, you should automatically be sent to the Zoom registration page where you’ll provide your name and email (required by Zoom), and a phone number (only needed to identify people who may sign in to the zoom meeting without their name). Once you press SUBMIT on the Zoom registration page, you should get the actual Zoom meeting ID and passcode sent to the email address you provided.
If anyone has any issues receiving the actual Zoom link after paying, contact Michael DeYoung and he can verify you’ve paid/registered and then he will send you the link directly. Michael will be recording these sessions in the event an attendee has a conflict during any of the session dates and misses the live session. Michael will provide links to participants in need.
Please note, the Windy App we’ll be using is the free version. The paid version you may find in the App Store allows you to store favorite locations and see forecast increments hourly versus every three hours. The paid version is not necessary for this class!
Discover the power of the weather app, windy.com. The workshop is delivered in four 75 minute sessions via Zoom; 60 minutes for presentation and 15 minutes for Q&A.
Session 1: Intro to Windy. Understanding what Windy is, its capabilities and limitations. Defining how forecasts for the general public differ from forecasts for photographic interests. We will go over the basic setup, setting up your preferences, and demonstrate the most useful features on Windy for forecasting dramatic light and photogenic, colorful clouds. Understanding graphical cloud forecasts-your best tool from windy. We will explain model(s) used, as well astheir strengths and weaknesses.
Session 2: Basic Meteorology and Cloud Identification for Photographers. We learn what clouds and atmospheric conditions create the best and most dramatic light. The more you know about what results in the best light, the more you will get out of Windy in recognizing forecasts that lead to good light and atmospheric outcomes. Explanation of aviation observations to help learn about clouds and favorable photo conditions. Participants are encouraged to practice, shoot something based on a forecast, and share with the group during session 3.
Session 3: Understanding Storm Cycles and how they deliver the best light. Sharing of images of cloud ID. Discussion of storm cycles and how to follow them in the forecasts. Other useful tools on windy help identify transitions in weather patterns and when they might lead to dramatic light. Live demo on Windy with analysis and prediction for the next few days in areas of interest.
Session 4: Understanding the Meteogram and forecasts for remote areas. How to compare models to get the best forecast. Comparing models to make the best determination of accuracy. Discussion and critique of predictions from last sessions and voluntary image sharing.
